ENGLISH COURSES

9th Grade English

Students will be working with various types of text such as short stories, poetry, journalism and novels.  Along with each respective text, students will study complimentary vocubulary words and grammar principles.  Students will also be accountable for reading outside of the class and will engage in different ways of working with their chosen novels such as presentations, written reports, discussions and visual representations.  Personal reflection on a theme or main idea is encouraged, providing critical analysis for acceptance or rejection of ideas and applications suggested by the texts.  Students learn pre-writing techniques and learn the organization patterns available for different types of writing.  Classes also use various organizational structures to locate, recall, construct and predict important information according to purpose and genre.  

10th Grade English

Students write informational texts such as essays, reports and articles.  They also learn to write functional texts such as instructions, findings and graphs.  Students are taught various writing organizational patterns.  Content is checked for accuracy, validity and reliability.  Literary genres are explored through writing of poems, essays and narratives.  Students use outlines for plot, setting, character and other elements.  Expectations for student writing are increased during the school year according to the student's increasing abilities.  Students explore different rhetorical modes and genres using steps in the writing process from brainstorming to revision. Students will be working with various types of text including novels, short stories, poetry and journalism.  Students will also be accountable for reading outside of class.  

11th Grade English

This course concentrates on formatted writing with research being an important part of the curriculum.  Students will learn to compare/contrast as part of character analysis in essay writing.  Students will participate in public speaking.  When preparing a speech, students are taught to evaluate their audience, decide a purpose for each speech, brainstorm about and then research the necessary information. Presentations are assessed on content, delivery, organization, accuracy, validity, usefulness, creativity and appropriateness towards audience.  Students will be working with various types of text such as short stories, poetry and novels. Along with each respective text students will study complimentary vocabulary words and grammar principles.  Students will be accountable for reading outside of class.  

12th Grade English

Students present literary performances in the form of short dramatic pieces, either interpretations of exisiting texts or creative exercises with or without a prop.  Students will be working with various types of text including poems, short stories, novels and journalism.  Along with each respective text, students will study complimentary vocabulary words and grammar principles.  Through discussion, writing and other activities, students are encouraged to bring personal experiences and prior knowledge relating to the text into the analysis and to then apply that knowledge to their own lives and to the world.  Students continue to use comprehensive strategies to fully comprehend text.
